“We’ve found it, our new home!”

Whether the property is a do up, has a wonderful view, or it is inundated with Pokemon, the purchase of property will be one of the biggest purchases you will make in your lifetime.

As a first home buyer, let’s see how KiwiSaver and Housing NZ may be able to assist you with your purchase.

KiwiSaver

If you have been contributing to KiwiSaver for over three years, you may be able to use some of your KiwiSaver funds for your first property purchase.

If you are eligible and would like to use your KiwiSaver, please complete the forms as soon as possible. These forms can be downloaded online from your KiwiSaver provider, and may need to be signed in front of your lawyer. There will be information you will need to get together and send off with your application.

KiwiSaver has strict timeframes and conditions and you must get on to this as soon as possible. You will also need to ensure that you have allowed enough time when signing the Contract for the KiwiSaver funds to be approved and paid in time for settlement.

Further information on KiwiSaver can be found at www.kiwisaver.govt.nz/new/benefits/home-withdrawal/

KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant

You may also be eligible for a KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant from Housing NZ of up to $5,000.00, or up to $10,000.00 if your purchase is a brand new home.

Once gain, you will need to apply to Housing NZ. The application can be made online by you from your computer at home.

Housing NZ also has strict timeframes and conditions. You must make your application as soon as possible to allow approval in time. When you have been approved, Housing NZ will send documents to your lawyer for you to sign. The KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant is paid on settlement and cannot be used for payment of your deposit.

Further information on the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant can be found at www.hnzc.co.nz/ways-we-can-help-you-to-own-a-home/kiwisaver-homestart-grant-and-savings-withdrawal/

Please chat with your lawyer when you are about to purchase a property. Kim Cotton of my office is an expert in KiwiSaver and the HomeStart Grant and will be more than happy to assist you.
